One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
The recent development escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
The founder revealed how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
