Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Message That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or security capacities.

"As we did, you all took an vow to safeguard and support this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Trump's Angry Response

The video message reportedly prompt a furious reaction from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Answer

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined statement condemning the remarks.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged online messages and retract his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement stated.

Lawmakers' Strong Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also released a response.

"We are former service members and security experts who value this nation and made an pledge to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Additional Political Comments

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."

He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."

The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of Congress advising troops to ignore directives, I think that is historic in US history."

The GOP official also reportedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and determine all that."

White House Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to defy the president's legal commands."

She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
