Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about seriously considering a presidential run post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
The California governor has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would expand Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy declared, following a recent deadly accident in California involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in loss of life and casualties.
His administration pointed out that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had earlier stated he was withholding additional funds from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a previous release countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
A recently conducted survey found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of previous highs to current figures.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the American people."
