Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
