New Year's Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be low, so additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this signified the weather was expected to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
