Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
