The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Implementation of Generative AI for Upcoming Project

The studio behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its next major project, creating significant anticipation within the player base. However, recent remarks from the studio's figurehead have introduced a new dimension to the conversation, addressing the team's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs

In a latest message, Larian's director explained that the team is employing generative AI for specific preliminary tasks. These involve developing presentation materials, creating early-stage visual ideas, and writing temporary copy.

Notably, Vincke emphasized that the final content in the game will be authored entirely by actual creatives. "Larian is creating every line ourselves," he stated.

Our studio is actively expanding our team of writers and are currently forming narrative groups.

Given that visual development is being particularly referenced — we presently have twenty-three visual developers and have roles to fill for further talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to letting our team spend more time on actual creation.

Every AI system used well is supplementary to a creative team process, not a substitute for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The admission of using AI at first sparked concern among portions of the fanbase. In response, Vincke issued further detail on social media.

"Our team utilizes these tools to explore references, just like we use Google and reference books," he explained. "During the very early planning process we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with hand-crafted concept art."

He added, "Our studio recruits artists for their inherent skill, not for their ability to replicate what a AI generates."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had earlier detailed the team's targeted approach to AI and ML, defining its use into three main areas:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to speedily create rough models of scenarios to validate concepts before complete development.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could in the future facilitate new forms of reactivity, specifically in creating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly stated that central narrative domains — such as writing — are are in no way fields where the company is reducing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these precise positions.

"We are neither shipping a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at reducing creatives to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
