The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
