Britain and America have secured a major commercial pact that will ensure zero duties on British pharmaceutical products going into the American market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise funding on medicines through the NHS. This commitment guarantees that duties on these key products will stay at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This agreement follows earlier threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented pharmaceutical imports, with figures floated as high as one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK bolsters the international landscape for new treatments and introduces long-overdue balance to American-British pharmaceutical trade," an announcement noted.

Economic Importance

Medicines represent one of the Britain's biggest exports to the America, which is easily the biggest destination for large UK drugmakers.

Export figures reveal that in the year prior to September, the UK sold drugs valued at billions to the US. This figure made up nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that timeframe.

"This guarantee protects jobs, stimulates capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed NHS Changes

The agreement includes several key commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to increase total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be restricted at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact takes place against a protracted row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over medicine costs and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by arguments that US consumers were charged a premium for the equivalent treatments than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while substantial investments have been announced toward US facilities.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a percentage of its overall budget over the last ten years.
