A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Today, his attention is fixed on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. The road from player to coach commenced through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”
Obsession, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and that's our focus long hours toward. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.
“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
The coach is focusing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. They've already ensured qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“We are both certain that the football philosophy should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the versatility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”
Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included impressed and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
